Why is carbon monoxide a separate concern?

USFA's carbon monoxide guidance describes CO as a colorless, odorless, poisonous gas that people cannot detect with their senses. It identifies improperly working or vented fuel-burning equipment, including furnaces, heaters and generators, as potential sources.

The absence of visible smoke or a noticeable smell therefore does not establish that CO is absent. Do not wait for either before responding to a CO alarm. The detection question is about the gas itself, not whether a room looks smoky.

Keep the terminology precise when asking for help. “Carbon monoxide” identifies the concern more clearly than “gas,” which could mean a different hazard. A product description should state what it detects; a household assumption should not fill a missing specification.

Does dual-sensor mean smoke and CO?

It does not establish that combination. In its home smoke-alarm position statement, USFA uses “dual sensor” for an alarm containing both ionization and photoelectric smoke sensors. Both technologies concern smoke detection.

USFA explains that these technologies sense smoke differently and can respond differently to flaming and smoldering fires. Its recommendation is for both types of smoke detection, either through separate alarms or a dual-sensor smoke alarm.

Keep two questions separate: which smoke-sensing technologies are present, and whether the product also detects CO. Do not assume that “dual,” “combination” or another short marketing term answers both. Ask for the written specification that names each detection function. This comparison does not rank individual products or claim that we have tested them.

Does a combination unit remove placement requirements?

No product label by itself establishes complete home coverage. USFA's smoke-alarm guidance recommends smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area and on every level, including the basement. Its CO guidance recommends CO alarms outside each separate sleeping area and on every level.

Follow the exact manufacturer's instructions and current local requirements for equipment and positioning. Use a licensed professional for electrical work; do not alter wiring or connectors yourself.

What should happen when an alarm sounds?

For a CO alarm, the Consumer Product Safety Commission says to move outside immediately, call emergency services and account for everyone. Do not search for the source. Do not re-enter until emergency responders permit it. Equipment that caused the problem needs proper professional service before reuse.

For a suspected fire, follow the escape plan immediately when possible and call emergency services from safety. If you cannot escape, contact emergency services immediately, give your location and follow their instructions. Reading a manual must never delay emergency action.

What information should you record before a problem occurs?
